A Guide to Planning Your Engagement Session

Let’s Talk Prep

Dress the Part

Choosing outfits can feel overwhelming—but it doesn’t have to be! Your clothes should reflect who you are, flatter you both, and complement the location and season. Think “stylishly effortless,” not stiff or overdone.

🧡 Keep These Styling Tips in Mind:

1. Coordinate—Don’t Match

Pick colors and tones that look great together but aren’t identical. Think earthy neutrals, soft pastels, rich jewel tones, or muted colors—whatever suits the vibe. Avoid super bright neons, loud logos, or busy patterns that clash.

2. Think in Textures

Textures photograph beautifully—knits, linen, denim, lace, cotton, and embroidery all add interest without being distracting.

3. Choose Movement-Friendly Pieces

Dresses or skirts that flow in the wind, soft button-ups, loose layers—they give your photos softness and movement. You’ll be walking, cuddling, sitting, maybe even spinning or laying down. Choose pieces that let you do it all comfortably.

4. Add Subtle Accessories

Skip the hats and scarves, but feel free to elevate your look with things like:

  • A cozy jacket
  • Jewelry
  • A neutral-toned blanket to wrap up in for cozy shots ( I bring one)
  • Hair clips, scrunchies, or fresh florals tucked behind the ear

5. Footwear Matters

Choose shoes that are comfortable and fit the setting.

Heels on grass? Not ideal. Sandals at the lake, boots on the trail, bare feet on the beach—all perfect.

6. Two Outfits? Go for It.

If you want more variety, bring two outfits—one more casual, one a little fancier. We’ll usually start with the relaxed look, then switch it up partway through. Let me know if you plan to change and I can bring a changing tent!

7. Dress for the Weather

Check the forecast. If it's freezing and you’re in a thin dress, it’ll show in your body language and your face. Same goes for dressing too warm in the heat. Your comfort is everything. Bring a cozy layer just in case!

Hair & Makeup Magic

This is the perfect excuse for a professional makeup or hair trial (and it always photographs beautifully). Just leave buffer time between your appointments and the session so you’re not rushed. A fresh mani is always a plus! (We will be getting a lot of hand shots to show off that ring!!)

Weather Plans

Golden sun is always the dream—but sometimes the skies have other plans. Light rain can be romantic, but if it’s storming or unbearably cold, we’ll chat about rescheduling. I keep flex dates open just in case.

Overcast? Still stunning. Cloudy skies make for soft, glowy light and cozy vibes—trust the process.

Location, Location...

Think about what fits your relationship. Outdoorsy explorers? Homebodies? Urban wanderers?

  • Nature gives us sunsets, wildflowers, forests, lakes.
  • Urban spots are stylish, lively, and fun—but come with a few onlookers.
  • At-home or Airbnb sessions are cozy, intimate, and unique.

Choose what feels right for you. This is your love story—we’re just freezing it in time.

Add Some Fun!

Fun and personal accessories? Always welcome.

Ideas to spark your imagination:

  • Pop a bottle of champagne 🍾
  • Cozy up with a blanket
  • Share ice cream, pizza, or your fav drink 🍕🍦
  • Bring a guitar, bouquet, or vintage car 🚙
  • Have matching mugs, a picnic basket, or even a Polaroid camera 📸

Little touches that tell your story make for the most memorable galleries.

Most of All…

Just be yourselves. Laugh, kiss, whisper silly things, slow dance in the field. Whatever feels natural. I’ll be guiding you the whole way!

Let’s turn this into a date night you’ll always remember.

You’ve got this—and I’ve got you. 😊
